Proper breastfeeding latch: how to identify and correct it

A good latch is the foundation of comfortable and effective breastfeeding, offering benefits for both you, mama, and your baby. When your baby latches on properly, feeding flows naturally, without discomfort and with all the nourishment they need.

Warning signs: paying attention to the latch

If you notice any of these signs, the latch may need some adjustments:

  • Persistent pain or a burning sensation during feeding (mild initial sensitivity is common, but sharp or continuous pain is not normal);
  • Sore, cracked nipples, or a flattened/pinched shape right after feeding;
  • Clicking or popping sounds repeated during sucking;
  • Your baby seems unsatisfied, fussy, or still hungry after nursing, or is not gaining weight properly.

💡 Helpful tip

Small adjustments in positioning and how you bring your baby to the breast usually resolve most discomforts. If pain persists or these signs continue, seeking guidance from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) can make all the difference! They are trained professionals who will guide you personally, offering techniques to ease the latch and make this journey much calmer and more enjoyable.
