The first three months of life are a time of remarkable transformation. The baby who came into the world so dependent and fragile gradually begins to discover that he or she has a voice, hands, and feet, and that there are people who love and care for him or her. It’s a time of adjustment—for the baby and for the whole family—and every small achievement deserves to be celebrated with love.

Always remember: milestones are guidelines, not rules. Every child develops at their own pace, and a slight difference in timing is no cause for concern. The important thing is to monitor their development and continue to see the pediatrician regularly.

What happens during the first 3 months?

Vision and Perception

• At birth, a baby can see objects best at a distance of 20–30 cm—the distance from your face when you hold the baby in your lap. Babies prefer strong contrasts, such as black and white.
• Around 2 months: The baby begins to follow objects with his or her eyes and turn his or her head toward things that move. He or she recognizes familiar faces and voices.
• At 3 months: the baby maintains steady eye contact, follows movements in almost every direction, and already shows a preference for familiar people.

Communication and Sounds

• In the first few weeks: Babies cry to communicate—and each type of cry can mean hunger, discomfort, tiredness, or simply wanting to be held.
• Around 2 months: the social smile appears—the baby smiles genuinely when seeing or hearing a loved one. The baby begins to babble soft sounds, such as “agu” and “egu.”
• At 3 months: responds with sounds when you talk to him, makes different vocalizations, and seems to enjoy hearing his own voice.

Movement and the Body

• Newborn: Movements are reflexive and not yet voluntary. When lying on his or her stomach, the baby can lift his or her head just a little.
• 2 months: The baby lifts his or her head better and can hold it steady for a few seconds when lying on his or her stomach. The arms and legs move more smoothly.
• 3 months: The baby can already lift his head and raise his chest while resting on his forearms when lying on his stomach. He moves his hands more freely, opens and closes his fingers, and tries to reach for nearby objects.

Emotions and Bonding

• He recognizes the scent, voice, and touch of the person who cares for him. He feels safe and calm in that person’s presence.
• Little by little, a back-and-forth begins to develop: you smile, and he smiles back; you speak, and he makes sounds. It's the beginning of a beautiful form of communication!

How to Provide Loving Encouragement in Everyday Life

• Talk and sing to him often: your voice is the sound he likes best, and it helps with his language development.
• Look him in the eyes when you talk to him or breastfeed him: this strengthens your bond and helps him develop eye contact.
• Place your baby on his or her stomach for short periods of time under your supervision when he or she is awake and in a good mood: this helps strengthen the neck, back, and arms.
• Hold colorful, soft, or gentle-sounding objects about 20–30 cm away so your baby can look at them and try to reach for them.
• Plenty of skin-to-skin contact, affection, and attention: that's the best stimulation there is.

Signs to discuss with your pediatrician

Every baby is unique, but it’s a good idea to seek advice if, around 3 months of age, your baby:

• He can't lift his head when lying face down;
• He doesn't follow objects with his eyes or fix his gaze on you;
• Does not respond to familiar sounds or make any sounds;
• Does not show any affection or interest in interacting;
• Always keep your hands clenched, without spreading your fingers.
