Every baby has their own pace, but knowing the general developmental milestones helps you follow their growth with greater peace of mind and identify when to seek professional guidance. Watching your baby grow is one of the most enchanting experiences of parenthood. Every smile, every movement, and every new achievement are important steps on their journey. Below, we detail the main milestones expected during the first year of life — with lots of love and care!

0 to 3 months — Discovering the World Around Them
In this early stage, the baby begins to gain more control over their own body and connect with those around them.
- Head control: Little by little, neck muscles strengthen, allowing the baby to hold their head upright for a few moments, especially during tummy time or when held gently.
- First social smiles: Around 6 to 8 weeks, smiling is no longer just a reflex and becomes a response to you — when hearing your voice, seeing your face, or feeling comforted and happy. It's their first "hello" from the heart!
- Visual tracking: Their gaze begins to focus better and follow objects, people, and lights moving in front of them. They can recognize familiar faces and show interest in watching the world around them.
4 to 6 months — More Movement and New Flavors
The baby gains more mobility and curiosity, exploring everything with their senses and touch.
- Rolling over: Lying down, they start rolling from tummy to back and vice versa, discovering they can move on their own. Always stay attentive and never leave your baby unattended on elevated surfaces!
- Sitting with support: With support or pillows around them, they can stay seated for a while, allowing them to observe their surroundings from a new perspective. The spine gradually gains strength.
- Bringing objects to mouth: Everything goes into the mouth! This is how they explore textures, shapes, and flavors. Offer safe and clean objects for this discovery.
- Starting complementary feeding: With guidance from your pediatrician, the first experiences with new foods begin — fruits, vegetables, purees. It is a time of discovery, without rush and with deep respect for the baby's pace.
7 to 9 months — Exploring and Interacting
Independence begins to emerge, and the baby wants to explore every corner within reach.
- Sitting without support: They can now sit for long periods without needing support, turn around, reach for objects, and lean with balance.
- Crawling: Many babies start scooting or crawling in different ways — some army crawl, others use their knees, while others push up on hands and feet. Everyone has their own way of moving forward!
- More interaction: Responds to their name, shows affection, fear, or preference for people and toys. Imitates sounds and gestures, and actively participates in games and conversations. Their curiosity is immense!
10 to 12 months — First Steps and First Words
The baby is preparing for a new phase full of movement and communication.
- Standing with support: Holds onto furniture, crib rails, or your hands and pulls up to stand, gaining confidence and strength in their legs. Cruises along surfaces.
- First steps: Some babies take their first steps on their own around 1 year of age; others prefer to wait a little longer. Every pace is unique! The important thing is safety and encouragement without forcing.
- First words: Along with babbling, they begin to say meaningful syllables ("mama", "dada", "water"), understand simple instructions, and point to what they want. Communication is blossoming!
💛 A very important reminder:
These milestones are guidelines, not strict rules. Every baby grows and develops in their own time, at their own pace, and with unique characteristics. Some advance earlier in one area, others in another — and that is perfectly normal!
If you have questions or notice significant differences in your baby's development, always consult your pediatrician. They will monitor growth and provide safe guidance. The most important thing is to offer love, encouragement, patience, and deep respect for your little one's pace!
